Vrygrond Peace Garden

In the heart of Vrygrond, a community garden is blossoming into a beacon of hope. This vibrant space is more than just a garden, it's a catalyst for change, empowering young people to take charge of their futures and build stronger, more resilient communities.

Zaid Philander, a passionate social activist, saw an opportunity to create a safe haven for children vulnerable to abuse and neglect. His vision for the Vrygrond Peace Garden is to provide a nurturing environment where children can thrive, and to roll out programs that will positively impact the entire community.

The garden is a hub of activity, connecting young people with community resources and fostering relationships between local children. By restoring the garden to its former glory, the project aims to create a sustainable source of income and economic growth for young people, tackling the pressing issues of unemployment and limited opportunities.

In Vrygrond, many families struggle to make ends meet, and providing for their loved ones is a daily challenge. The community garden is working to change this narrative by offering training programs and workshops that equip individuals with the skills they need to succeed.

The community garden is working to change this narrative by offering a range of initiatives, including:

  • Abundant harvests that sustain the community, providing fresh produce for families in need

  • A green classroom where eco-awareness and education thrive, teaching children about sustainable gardening practices

  • Nurturing spaces where children and youth feel safe and supported, offering a refuge from abuse and neglect

  • Collaborations built on trust and transparency, partnering with local organisations to amplify impact

  • Opportunities for volunteers to get involved and make a difference, fostering a sense of community and social responsibility

Through these initiatives, the garden is nurturing a brighter future for all, equipping individuals with the skills they need to succeed, and fostering a sense of community and connection that will last a lifetime.
